The Shelby Mustang is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang built from 1965 through 1970. Following the introduction of the Fifth-generation Ford Mustang the Shelby nameplate was revived in 2007 for new high performance versions of the Mustang.
The Shelby GT500 Mustang was redesigned, inside and out, with the standard Ford Mustang, giving it a sleeker and more modern look. The Ford Special Vehicles Team (SVT), used the 2008 GT500KR as the starting point, and built upon its already impressive performance. The GT500 gets an increase in power to 540 horsepower (403 kW) and 510 lb·ft (690 N·m) of torque. SVT also set out to give the new GT500 better handling, aerodynamic profile for high speed stability and efficiency. The 2010 GT500's fuel efficiency has therefore increased by 2 miles per gallon.
